My grandfather taught me a trick to sex eggs. From the time they were layed, I am not sure if it works for every breed but it worked 72% of the time for our RIR and NHR.

We would look at each egg. So if we wanted more hens then roosters we would look at the shape. More of a point means rooster and more rounded means hen.

Does anyone else do this or tried with other breeds?

Sounds like a tale my wife would tell and not only is she getting more advanced in age, we've been married a LONG time.

I think it's a tale, kind of like if you keep the bator temp different you will get hens/roos. BUT, If it works for you then thats awesome !!!! Good luck !!

I've never heard that before, but will definitely try it in the spring when I get my bator out again.

I have heard of this. Do not know if it is a wives tales or not. I am sure someone somewhere has made an excel spread sheet and taken careful and thourough notes on the eggs and what came out of them. Would have to mark each egg and chick that emerged and then waited to see if it was a roo or hen. WOW, sounds like a lot of work.

WAIT !! here it is, my ticket to having to incubate LOTS AND LOTS of eggs to see if this is a fact or not. Hmmmmmm, you know that the scientific theories require alot of data (eggs incubating) to really get a good footing on such a project.

I will approach the wife with this this evening !! (did I just say this, this ??)

I even have excel on my computer !! Well heck, were there is a will there is a way. WANNA BET THE OUTCOME !???

I tried that theory with a batch of eggs and a broody hen, took only the rounded looking eggs and set them under her..... out of 8 eggs 5 ended up to be roosters.
