A fellow I know locally gets $20 each for Lavender Orp chicks he gets for $2 an egg. Unreal demand. That may be the key. Some new, coveted chicks and Rich Bay Area folks= Cash Money.
My 8 TSC girls pretty much pay for their feed through egg sales. 100# of feed will last a good 3 to 4 weeks and costs me about $24.00. In that time I can sell 12 dozen eggs for $2.00 each and still have 4 dozen eggs for my own use.
I have just recently started selling fertilized hatching eggs from my white rock flock. I get around $1.00 per egg for those. I am now going to try to sell some hatched chicks from my next batch of eggs and continue through the summer. Those that don't sell will make it into the flock as layers or meat birds.
As for power consumption that is minimal compared to running a heat lamp in a brooder.
The Brinsea ECO has a max power consumption of 45 watts.
If electricity is $.10/KWH the hourly cost of the ECO is (.045KW X $.10/KWH) = $0045/hour or $.108/day which gives $2.268 over a 21 day incubation.
I don't plan on ever getting rich but I will certainly recoup some of the money that I've put out as I strive for some self sufficiency.
When I Sell Silkie Chicks Here On Long Island I Get $8. A Piece For One Week Olds. As They Get Older The Price Goes Up To $20-35 I Have No Problem Getting That Price For Them
Thats it Location! I hear peeping in the incubator as I write this. My heart is beating out of my chest & I hope that excited feeling of hatching out your own chicks never stops.
