With brine shrimp, I've only hatched them and fed them to the fish right away. You can maintain them longer if you feed them, but my understanding is that they are most nutritious if you feed them to the fish right away.

With daphnia cultures, which are freshwater cultures, I've kept them going for years. They definitely reproduce for you. Besides being able to sustain a culture of them, they stay alive in the tank if they aren't eaten right away, so there's no fouling of the water. For larger fish or adults, I use the magnas. Other species can be better for very small fry. The betta breeders in Thailand use them a lot.
