Does anyone have a home made recipe for suet?

I found some online, but I'd be interested to hear if any of you have a recipe that is geared more for chickens.........either for a treat or winter feeding. Thanks!

I am sure you know that suet is made of fat renderings and really isn't the best thing to feed in the summer months...spoiled fat

Are you wanting some recipes for winter feeding?
I was going to make some for the wild birds last year but with all the straining and cooking of fat I decided to just go with the store bought stuff LoL

Well if you render the fat yourself it can smell VERY gross, some recipes even warn you of this lol
When I was doing mine, to make them stretch and add to them I would melt one commercial block down and add more seed/fruits etc and then use empty plastic suet containers to mold them again. Or I put parchement paper (used for cooking) or waxpaper to line the actual suet cage so I could make on the size of the cage. I usually could get 2 blocks of that size out of the one I started with.

I'd be real cautious about giving chickens more than a tiny bit of it, even in the winter - unlike wild birds, chickens generally have ample caloric intake to begin with and often not too much to do except sit around and eat. (And fats have very high caloric content, ounce for ounce). Not a good combination. You may not care if your chickens develop 'love handles' <g> (hm, *actual* handles on a chicken would be really convenient, wouldn't it?) but body fat can interfere with egg laying and is generally considered to predispose chickens to becoming eggbound and perhaps to internal laying, neither of which do you want.

Anyhooo...

You can make vegetarian suet, I think there is a recipe for it on that link I gave and I think it says that you can sub vegetable shortnening in for any animal fat. So really all 'suet' cakes can be made veggie friendly.

I have another reason to be glad I bought that food dehydrator now LoL I can use it for something besides dog treats

Here's some for you...think I'll print them out with the others I am adding to my 'pet recipes'

MARVEL MEAL ORIGINAL RECIPE - Veg Suet
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup crisco shortening or other shortening
4 cups yellow cornmeal
1 cup white flour

Hand mix as one would mix cookie dough. This makes two
pounds. Store in covered container in refrigerator.

Summer Suet

3 cups cornmeal
1 cup flower
3 tablespoons baking powder
2/3 cup oil
3 1/2 soy milk
1 cup nuts
2 tablespoons cayenne pepper

Mix together the cornmeal, flour, and baking soda. Whisk in the oil
and soy milk. Stir in nuts and cayenne. Pour into an oiled 13x9x2"
pan and bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes. Allow to cool. Cut
into 6 suet feeder sized pieces. Suet can be stored in a freezer
