Woke up this morning, checked my Polish and her egg, and it peeped at me (no pip yet)! So I went to town, came back a couple hours later, and saw the broken egg shell laying next to the Polish in the nest. That was one quick hatch! Guess the high humidity today helped it break out. The chick itself looks like a Black Silkie with the black skin and five toes (Mother is cuckoo, father is white), so who knows what color it will eventually be, or what kind of feathering it will have. But he/she sure is cute! I'll post a picture when Mom relaxes and stops pushing the baby back under her whenever it tries to go exploring in the new broody coop.
My 8th Generation Sizzle Hens (5 & 6 mos) and Silkie Roo(7 mos) are still too young (for Silkies maturation take a bit longer - I understand). My 9 mos old Silver laced polish Rooster had tried to mount them but the pullets aren't having it! My Sizzles and Silkie are from an AMAZING breeder, she's got her birds producing double and triple crests, so I'm excited to see what comes out when they finally start laying!!
I'm trying to create a verisimilitude of Mr Airie Bolan's "Big Bird"! So I've got two Ameraucana Hens (one has Tufts, the other Muffs), and one Long Legged Japanese Bantam as well. My Silver laced polish has mounted all three hens, I just need to get better at candling, coz I'm 90% sure all these eggs are fertile but I can't seem to find that little red dot!
