I have an old article from Mother earth news on wood-fired earth ovens. I would like to build one and was wondering if anyone had any experience with them? Does weather or temp. affect them? It can get in the single digits in the winter and with the windchill down below 0* I am not concerned with the summer temps as all the ovens like this that I have seen were in desert type areas, so it would be fine here.

I don't have one but several years ago I was considering building one. As with most everything I do - I was researching something else and got sidetracked. DH and I have discussed it several times because I love to bake bread and thought how neat that would be. But.....never got around to it. So I will be watching this to see if anyone else responds.

edited to add: I would love to see that article.

Yes I really want to build one, especailly after reading more about them. I thought they were mainly just for baking. You can cook anything in them including fish and casseroles. With this I wouldn't use my oven at all in the summer(I hardly do now anyway, we B-B-Q mostly)

I found several websites with pictures on building one. But everywhere they all talk about this same book:
Build Your Own Earth Oven: A Low Cost, Wood Fired Mud Oven By: Kiko Denzer from what I can find it costs about $15.00 and is what they all base their designs on.

If you want the websites that I found I can put them up here or send them to you in an email.

I am all excited now, com'on spring!!!

Even our DGD can help with this project.

I was talking to DH last night and I can't build it this spring . I thought of putting out away from the house in our yard.
He had already planned to put one in right in back of the house! But right now he is grading the back then has to put in a firepit, benches, woodracks etc. Maybe by the end of the year though. He wants it close by the house so that I can even use it in the winter(if we don't have too much snow) What a sweetie!

If you make one take pics and let me know how it goes. I think I will get the book for added info.

Thanks for the info. Mine will probably not get built this sping either. Drat it all.
We have been trying to purchase the property next door for over a year. It is in probate with minors involved. 6 times they have called us to ask if we are still interested and 6 times we have said yes - and 6 times the judge said no. Well now after we started making other plans and 1 day before we started our chicken coop they called again. The judge finally said yes. Now we wait for a March 25th court date to see. If we actually get it this time we will be busy little bees this summer cleaning up the mess there. And I do mean mess. Rotting trailer, piles of trash - nasty mess. Keep your fingers crossed. If you get yours finished first post pics.
