We have an infestation of NFM. The hens will be treated with topical ivermectin today but I would like to try Exzolt. Since it's winter here (northern MA, -2 here this morning), the hens aren't drinking much and may not drink enough water to get a full dose of Exzolt. Has anyone put a single dose on bread and fed it?

We lost 1 hen during a very cold snap, brought her inside thinking she was hunched and lethargic because of the cold, and put a heating pad on her. Within the hour there were mites all over the pad, the hen, the bin, and me. Thousands. We had no idea there was a problem. The girls look glossy and healthy. I checked everyone in the coop and didn't see any mites. We cleaned the coop and covered the floor and nesting boxes with diatomaceous earth and fresh shavings.

Now we have another one inside also with mites. I treated her with ivermectin yesterday and she is standing today but not eating or drinking and I don't know what to do for her. PLEASE HELP!

Welcome to BYC. What is your general location. I had not heard of this new medication for treating mites in chickens, but it sounds interesting. It sounds like the dosage is very small and important when adding it to the chickens’ first water of the day. The dosage is 0.05 ml per kilogram (each 2.2 pounds,) so weight should be taken. It is given once and repeated in 7 days, and there is no egg withdrawal time. The only place that presently sells it is in Australia. Have you seen it in the US? Here is some info:

Bravecto is the same drug Fluralaner, but it is a prescription drug that can be obtained from vets and Chewy. But again, dosage is very important, and it is used in dogs in miligrams. So I would be cautious in using this medication until dosage is figured out. It may become available for chickens in the near future.

Exzolt does contain the same ingredient as Bravecto but it is approved for poultry. Carnation Soap repackages Exzolt into smaller bottles so that it is practical (and affordable!) for small flocks.

My concern is that the hens won't drink enough to get a full dose as it's winter here and their water consumption has dropped.

Here is says it has a “wide margin of safety”. When they present the data, they tested up to 5x the normal dosage at 3x the recommend duration with no adverse effects noted:

Here are more water dosage instructions for anyone who may need it in the future:

You could try to gently drip some onto your chickens beak if she won’t drink. Just do a little at a time.

The page to order this has disappeared, so I think you’d need a vet to prescribe it:

Thank you @Eggcessive and @Geomom for sharing about this drug.

Thanks for the information. It's odd about Carnation, the product was listed on their site yesterday.

Yes!! I just saw it this morning and when I returned to the link to share it here and try to order myself it was gone. I may try to ask our vet for a prescription anyways. Mites have been very bad here, it would be nice to have this around for winter.

Have you tried to powder your chickens with a permethrin powder to begin treating the mites? I know it seems hopeless at first with a heavy infestation, but it does work with diligence.
