I have been reading about these because of their unique egg shell colors. I want as many different colors in my egg cartons as I can get!

Are they friendly and generally a hardy breed. They sure are pretty, in an old school chicken kind of way. I'd like to see pics, too, if you have any. I might get some of these girls if I can find a reputable place to get them that isn't too far from WV.

The feathersite also has some great pics of Barnevelders too.

Ideal carries them. The ones I got have very nice lacing too.

Thee eggs are not as dark as Marans but still darker than most other brown egglayers.

Visit my website for more info. I have several pens of breeding stock with different bloodlines. I have a list of names for eggs but could probably fit you in in a few weeks if you are interested.

san and nadine,

your barnies are beautiful!

Nadine - I looked at your website. ALL of your birds look great. I like your Wheaten Marans, too. Do all marans lay really dark eggs, or just the Cuckoo Marans?Unforetunately, I am not quite ready for chicks yet, but I hope to be soon. I haven't figured out how to go about integrating new chicks in with 4 mo chicks. After I get done scratching my head about that one for a while, hopefully I will be able to add more breeds to my motley crew.

I'll try to get on your list when the time comes, and hope you have enough for me!

I looked at ideal's site, but they are in tx, and that seems like a long ride to WV for those babies.

Can anyone post a picture of one of their eggs, please? What size are the eggs?

That hen is BEAUTIFUL!

I have a couple hatchery stock barnevelder pullets. They're calm, gentle birds, but not as friendly as most of my other pullets - they keep to themselves and prefer not to be handled. Both barnevelders went broody on me a couple months ago - they're the only two out of my 13 pullets that went broody (one was a great broody & mother, the other was a big klutz and broke most of her eggs).

The good mama:

The two eggs on the bottom row, right side, next to the white egg, are from the barvelders - darker than the other brown eggs I get (the three on the left side of the bottom row), but not as dark as marans.
