Does anyone have this coop?

Nath,
One of the many many things I like about living in Arkansas is that everyone talks to each other. Be proactive and get on Craigslist, go to farm and garden and place an ad that you are looking for scrap lumber for a chicken house.People are so nice here they would probably bring it to your front door.

If you see a big pile of demolition, stop and ask someone if you can pick out some 2x4's or whatever. You can do a lot with the lumber that Lowes puts in its dumpsters. They are about 4 feet long, and about 2x2. They are used as spacers for shipped lumber.

Hardware cloth is expensive and it is hard to get around not using it. The only thing you could do is double over the poultry wire which is less that half the price until you get the spacing right.

My Dad mentioned that people in Florida (where he lives) use birdnetting to keep snakes out of areas. I was just wondering if that could be incorporated into your design since it is pretty inexpensive.

Looks nice, I considered buying one of those myself. My only question about this design would be how do you clean it out? Do you need to climb in there yourself to do it? Wouldn't that be kind of cramped and awkward?

I like the design of these coops better:

One whole side of the coop opens up, so you can simply sweep/shovel everything out into a barrel, etc. I decided to "steal" their design to make my own coop, though, and am working on it right now.

Wow...Those are nice coops Elmo. Expensive...but nice. Out of my budget. DH made ours..still needs finishing touches...for almost free from all the wood he had left over from different projects over the years. Cleaned up the garage ! LOL
I really like how creative folks get with the wood pallets. That's a nice looking pallet coop. It must be very solid since I've tried to lift one of those pallets and could barely get it off the ground.

WOW!! What a great excuse to get a new coop!

MY excuse is that I've been out of chickens for a while and I WANT BACK IN!

It feels great, doesn't it!

I used that design to draw up my coop, which is much larger and in my opinion much better made. That coop is not really framed out, and pretty small. I currently have 8 hens, but could easily house 10.

That is a nice styled coop.
Mine is 4 x 6 with the nest boxes hanging off the side. I built mine to support 6 hens with 4 feet each. Currently I have 4 girls. Someday i will have more. But I would use the rule of thumb - full size chickens 4 feet each.
If your interested in what my coop looks like - see my BYC page.

Good heavens! That's not a coop! That's a castle! YOU need to come to MY house! I'll let you build one like that for me! I'll even let you buy the materials for it! I'll feed you dinner!

Have you thought of entering it in one of the BYC coop contests?

You won't serve me a 'possum, would you?

I never got around to making up a BYC personal page to enter it. Maybe one of these days? I finished it back in Jun. we are getting eggs now, and feel like all the hard work was worth it. Very little maintenance and upkeep......
