Does anyone have to keep bears away from your coop?

I am considered raising chickens, but have had 3 or 4 bears go through my neighborhood in the springtime the last 2 years. Is surrounding the coop with an electric wire fence the best option?

If I had to keep bears away from my coop I would probably move!
Seriously though, yes, an electric fence would be your best option.

My friend in Alaska has chickens, and lives where brown bears pass through during certain times of the year. She has an electric fence around her run. Several strands of it. The fence actually looks like rope, but is electrified.

We have bears where I live. Our fence is electrified, but I have no idea if a bear has every tested it or not. I think it would have to put its nose or mouth on the wire to have much an effect.

I've read the tip to put dabs of peanut butter on the wire to train the local predators.
