Does anyone here spin??

Just curious. I posted in Buy/sell offering free Pygora fiber and thought surely there were some spinners here who would surely jump at the chance at some free fiber.

I would love to learn to spin, unfortunately it seems that spinning wheels start at about $400.

CG, No I've never heard of it, had to do a quick google search. Seems there's a lot of information about it available.

Very interesting. The drop Spindles are only about $15, so that is something I wouldn't mind investing in. Especially since if i lose interest it's not a lot of money to be out.

My smart butt Dh is like "Yeah, did you think Mongolians and native Americans carried around big spinning wheels around with them??"

Scrambled- when I first saw the title I thought "Spinning" like the aerobic thing on the stationary bikes.

Angie- the cost difference was my thought on the spindle thing too. Plus, I figured it was pretty portable and I could use it while watching TV. I haven't gotten one yet. Part of my ten year plan for the little farm here is to add Southdown Babydoll mini sheep. Their wool is about the same quality of cashmere. Figure I need to learn to spin to rationalize the sheep purchase.

I was just thinking about spinning last night. There is a technique they use for the native crafts in Papua New Guinea (where I grew up) It requires spinning soft yarn-like strands into string, to make baby carriers and such.

I have -got- to learn this 'cause my sister is pregnant now and I 'need' to make her one of those carriers from our childhood. Angie, let me know if you get the drop spinning to work..? I'm interested in hearing more.

Well I just found a hand spindle on Ebay that comes with a wool roving and instructions. So I can try my hand at it and if I find I like it I can purchase some hand cards(which are needed to prepare the wool/fiber for spinning) and try to Spin some of C.J.'s wool if no one ends up taking it.

Hand carders are sort of pricey but I can forget about ever buying a drumcarder...they cost about as much as a spinning wheel! Yikes!
