Does anyone know how to make an 18th century style bed canopy?

Can anyone help me out? I have a four poster bed, and I'd love an 18th century style canopy for it, with closing curtains. I'm not really sure how to go about it, as I can't seem to find any patterns. They don't look terribly hard to make, but I'm not that experienced with sewing and pattern making.

Is it just four poster, or do you have dowels connecting all four corners? If you have rods to connect all four corners I'd buy some drapes and modify them so they can be hung on shower curtain holders.

I do not have dowels, but I will get some eventually. The decorative part at the top of each post is detachable so that you can sandwich the dowels between them so you can have a canopy, or you can leave them as they are, without dowels.

I'll try to find some pics of the type of canopy I want in the next few days.
