Does anyone know this? Help.

Folks have to understand why we can't sell eggs for $. 99 cents a dozen and should understand why a fresh hen has to cost more. Especially if she's a heritage breed and not just a run of the mill hybrid.

Hatcheries generally only sell started sex links and I'm not sure how old they are.

I just gave away 10 hens and one summer gave away chicks and four hens in their second year due to the fact the other were pecking them. Two Aussies and Two GLW's. I'd rather give them away then not be able to take care of them.

My point being, I'm not a heartless cheap skate. I just feel a POL hen is worth paying for.

JEA charges .06111 per kwh average for residential use since Jan 01 2012 not counting all the taxes, fees and other Jacksonville 'extras' on the bill (an additional 60-80$ on my bill)

There aren't any hatcheries nearby, so when I looked into buying 16 wk pullets(leghorn, sex-link), it was the shipping that killed the idea. Plus, I love all the other breeds,,the colors, personalities. I've been raising a few extra chicks to sell at 16 wks-BO, DEL, PR, Silver Wyandottes. I hope to sell them for a small profit on Craig's list. Thanks for the input.

How much? I'm considering dumping the hatching thing and just ordering pullets every two years. No roosters to deal with. Or perhaps just keeping one roo.

But see the thing is, I've got some really nice BR's from MO. The type you can't get from a hatchery and I've got SFH's and I've got Lav orps and Birchen Marans the hatcheries don't have these yet.

This time of year at auction laying hens are bringing anywhere from$14- $22 each. I wouldn't sell one laying or almost at POL for less than $15 each. I am selling my 8-10 week old pullets for $10 each and not having any problems finding buyers for them.

We have had ours for about a month and they've gone though about half their bag, and that's 12 chickens. So, not sure, even though I don't even know how big our bag is. Hope I could help.

I made a new friend yesterday and she was telling me they raised pigs and it wasn't worth it. I know they own a farm here and I felt really bad for her. I suspect we're all thinking money since even for those who have jobs things are tight.

Lord have mercy,

Rancher
