In my opinion he looks to be a mix with a barred rock and a RIR. I know for a fact that he has barred rock in him and that he is mixed.

The male of the black sex link? Typically, this is a Barred female( of several possible breeds, but BR being the most common) under a red male (any number of red males work) will produce mostly black females and these off looking, semi barred, red streaked males.

This is the essence of a sex link. Telling the chicks apart, males from females, upon hatch and as they go along. Lots of these sex link males get mixed up in the sales bins at feed stores and folks buy them. Lots of time folks think they're just a poor Barred Rock and that's fine. He's a chicken and dang fancy one for sure.
