Does anyone know what this is and what I can do to help?

I’m at a loss of what to do here. Been cleaning daily, twice a day now with Epsom salt bath, cleansing spray, and Neosporin. Today is day three I’m worried, she is eating and displaying mostly normal behavior was dirt bathing when I came to clean her up. Keeping her separate also. Does anyone know what this is, what else I can do, and if she will be okay?

Since she is 7, she probably has an enlarged lower belly under her vent that has been pecked or injured. Because she probably has salpingitis or a tumor inside, it has stretched the skin and opened. There is an abdominal wall or fascia that is holding her organs in, but the layer of skin and fat is gone. As long as no more pecking is done or flies get into it, she should start to heal. I would just continue a once a day warm soak to keep her clean, and apply the healing plain Neosporin ointment until it heals. Some do heal, but her salpingitis or whatever she has going on inside may eventually kill her. Salpingitis causes formation of lash egg material inside the abdomen, because the eggs produced have reversed and been deposited inside her oviduct and abdomen. When you open the cavity after death, the lash material can look like thick cheese like deposits. Here is an article with pictures of what advanced salpingitis looks like:

Thank you very much for the information. I have been cleaning her daily with warm baths, antibacterial, and Neosporin today will be day six. She’s not as lethargic as I felt like she was the first two days. She seems like her normal self for the most part. The wound looks the same, I’m wondering how long I should continue the warm soaks and everything. I’m getting concerned about getting her wet with the warm baths because it’s getting cooler where I live and is going to possibly rain. Is it okay to get her wet in the cooler weather or should I clean it some other way?

I would try not to get her wet unless she can be inside where it is warm until she is dry. Just try to keep it clean with a warm cloth and and covered with antibiotic ointment. I’m glad that she seems normal in her behavior. Let us know how she gets along.
