Does anyone know where to buy hay?

I can't believe you all are paying so much for hay!! Now I know why Some of the farmers around here load it up on semis and take to other states to sale! Last year it was 2$ for hay 2.50-3.50 for alfalfa.
You are talking square bales right not the big round bales.

This is in ky a little more expensive then my small town but still cheap considering what you all are paying.

Yes, 5$ for the square bale. Rounds are much higher, i know more than 50$ i'd have to look at my hay guys list next time i go. I'm In Canada btw.

It's impossible to tell what the price is really, though, without knowing the weight of the bales. When I think of a bale of hay, I'm thinking of a square bale that weighs roughly 90 lbs. Someone else might be referring to a 50 lb bale.

A more accurate price would be per ton...

I agree, saying 'hay' is like saying 'ice cream'. It's too generic a word. What kind of hay are you buying? What cutting? What quality? What is the weight per bale? Cost per ton?
I am buying second cutting orchard grass from Eastern Washington, 90 pound bales, $18/bale. It is for my horses and the geese won't eat it but they do like it for nesting material. Alfalfa is running about the same and timothy was a bit higher the last time I was in the feed store. The only 'hay' I could buy around here for $5 would be a local weed filled mix from the people down the road who let their cut grass get rained on right before they baled it.

So if you are getting nice hay for $5 a bale I am really jealous.

Considering my hay is fed to my horses, yeah you bet it is quality lol It's the smaller square bales, a grass mix .. we don't buy by the ton, it's sold by the bale, round or square. Locally owned and grown, never rained on.... we are very lucky to have a good source.

I use NO hay for poultry here.... too expensive imo.

Check at your local feed stores, the small business ones not TSC. If they don't carry hay (the feed stores here don't) ask them to recommend someone that sells hay. I did this last week. I was looking for timothy hay for my geese and the old timer at the feed store could not think of anyone around that sold it. Most family owned feed stores are going to want to help and will have connections in the community. Mine is great. They even called the mill for me to see if I could get a specific grain I was looking for.

I see hay advertised on CL all the time here. I live in a farming community and everyone around grows their own. I would be leary to buy from CL only because I am not familiar with buying hay so I would rather get a recommendation from a local as to who to talk to.

Here, bermuda is the norm though mixed grass is also abundant. My local store recommended someone that was selling bales for $3.50 of bermuda. I'm not sure on weight but I know that there can be a huge difference. I see 4X5 rolls going for between $25-50 on CL.

square bales and not alfalfa, we dont feed that to our animals. We pay because it is trucked in from as far away as Canada depending on the supplier. Peanut hay and some oat hay we can get local to our state.

It is $6.50 here for the square bale at the local feed stores. It is locally grown.

Yikes! You're paying even more than me! I'm paying about $16/90 lb bale of alfalfa. Orchard and Timothy are about $17/90 lb bale here in Olympia. I feed a mix of Timothy and local grass in the summer, but I need to switch to straight alfalfa in the winter to keep weight on my older mare. If I could get my geese to eat a higher volume of hay I would. It's cheaper than the $40 bag of Mazuri waterfowl!
