It may be a pen reared bird that either escaped or was released.

I was walking through the woods in the middle of nowhere and he just started following me

I've walked up on one before as well. It didn't approach me, but it didn't run away either. I got within 5 feet of it and it just looked at me. This was in the UP of Michigan, many miles from any sort of civilization, unlikely a farm raised bird. I dont know why?

We had a grouse in the mountains here that would run at your atv tires and attack them. You had to drive super slow to get by it with out running it over. it was in the same spot for two years then vanished. Funny little thing, my dad even caught it and gently tossed it off the trail once because it would just not move. I think it must have nested there.
