Does anyone raise quail on the ground?

Sorry to hear this. This is more an issue than I thought. I'm allergic to dogs and cats. Crazy Lady is down to 7 dogs.

Since I'm on allergy medicine, no clue if I am allergic. Hmmm.

Sounds like the aviary will become the chicken excluding garden. What a lovely garden!

We need a quail vs. other bird informal allergy poll. It seems they might be worse than some others based purely on anecdote.

That will be wonderful @igorsMistress . What a great rodent-proof start. You could probably feed a family of four outta that thing.

Have you thought about pheasants? or are you allergic to any kind of bird.

It would be perfect for them, although I could see not wanting to risk another go-round with the itches. :hmm

I don't know how severely I'm affected until I keep a bird and spend time with it. So far I'm ok with the chickens, I've had parakeets and cockatiels and was ok with those. For whatever reason the quail were too much. It might have been the number of birds that caused the overload.

I have thought about pheasants but haven't gotten that far I guess. Plus, they're kind of expensive depending on what you want.

Aren't pheasants kept only in pairs or separated until breeding?

I think you can keep some species of pheasants together, so you could have a pair of a couple species.
Or, if it might have been the number that was the issue, maybe an ornamental quail that you only have a few of. Those- what are they called, the blue scaled quail?

I just had to put down some members of my chicken flock so I'm just going to concentrate on them for a while. With a dozen chickens, 3 dogs and a husband I have enough to take care of for now. Maybe some day though.
