Not sure what you mean 'other than plastic', but if it counts, I use bubblewrap on one window of the chicken building (also on my basement windows) -- if you attach it w/ doublesided tape around the windowframe, with the bubbles facing out towards the window glass, it offers somewhat better R value than just a plastic sheet, with not too much loss of light.

I use the heavy paper feedbags and put plastic over the windows to the coop and then a feedbag over that.
