my buff orp has been spending more and more time on the nest. yesterday she stayed all day so I thought she had decided to 'get er done'. this morning I found that she was on the roost all night & the eggs were of course cold.

do you think she will continue until she figures this out?

My expereince with broodiness has been-the hens are glued to the nest all day/night. I never see them get off the nest and I will usually take them off and set them by the food once a day-they usually eat like crazy and run right back in 2-3 minutes. I would think shes not quite fully broody but this will come.

It does progress. I usually don't give them eggs until they are sitting overnight for a couple of days.

It also depends on the chicken and the commitment they have. I have a Cochin right now that acts broody all morning. Screeching, flat as a pancake, the whole act. Until around lunchtime then she goes out with the other girls. She's still laying and this has been going on for a month.

I would wait to give her eggs until she sits overnight for a couple of days at least.
