I used DE religiously for two years and noticed no difference than before I used it and now that I don't use it. It did not control flies or gnats and the only time my chickens every got mites was when I was using DE. IMHO but honest opinion, DE is all hype.
The science of DE also does not add up for me. If you use DE, do not assume all is well. Do also keep checking for mites, lice & worms.
What I have noticed reduced flies were my solar fly trap coupled with the fly eating nematodes & the fly eating (gnat-size) wasps, both of which are used in Churchill Downs to control flies around the stables.
