does each hen need a nesting box? or should they share?

I have 2 nesting boxes built. wondering if I should get more. Planning on about 6 hens.

I have 38 laying hens and 12 hen boxes
They only use 4 of the boxes

you should be okay for now

I have 11 boxes but invariably they try to get in the same few and all at the same time and I have 16 hens laying and 10 young pullets not yet laying

No, each hen does not need a nesting box. Two should be fine for six hens

I have 7 hens and 3 boxes. They use 1 or 2 of them and switch day to day. Lol
