Does egg-laying make them uncomfortable?

So little Hester gave us two eggs yesterday and one today. They are the first eggs we've ever had as we are new chicken-keepers. But after she laid her egg today, she was lying out in the sand in the pen, looking like she was still sitting in the egg-laying box, in that same posture, and she was breathing in a strange, rhythmic way. At first I thought she was unwilling to get up and walk, but when I had a treat in my hand, she hopped up and came running. But does a hen need some recovery time after laying an egg?

Chickens only lay 1 egg a day (it takes about 25 hours to make an egg), so it sounds like you have more than 1 layer - congrats! Since it is her first time laying, she might be confused about the feeling. Give her a little time.

I am pretty sure Hester Laid two eggs yesterday (or one late at night the night before ane one early in the morning yesterday), since she's the only one in the coop who should be able to lay eggs the color of the two that got laid. One was a mis-fire egg, thin and broken by the time we found it. But the other girls in the coop should lay blue, green, or white eggs. So two brown eggs makes me suspicious that Hester is having some start-up issues...

Oh yes - if it wasn't fully formed it was probably a misfire. (I like that term!) I would just keep an eye on her for the next few days. Some of mine have acted a little strange when they first start laying and I tend to get a lot of either really tiny eggs or huge double-yolkers in the beginning.

Yes, chickens will lay soft shelled eggs then act strange. It is her first time laying so there is nothing to worry about.
