Does grass stand a chance in a large run??? Spring update

Maybe because you are limiting their access in the run. I had a larger run than that and 8 chickens with daytime access every day and the grass lasted one season. The next spring when it sprouted they mowed it down and it eventually died. I am toying with the idea of making a low wire frame and seeding different parts and moving the screeen so they have greens inside their pen. Probably oats or something that sprouts quick.

Good idea. I have seen posts where the members made a frame with wire and moved it around so that the grass would have a chance of re-establishing under the wire and the birds couldn't dig it up.

You should be able to keep grass with that big of an area. If the grass starts looking a little picked, just throw some seed down and a little straw and hopefully the chickens wont eat the seed! lol

I think the grass will be gone pretty soon.
My 2 silkies are in a small(well 8X8 run) the grass is slowly dying off. They eat the grass too, so, grass really wont stand a chance. Unless you get a chicken tractor...

I think some people put bedding down when it turns to guck, while others use sand. But there were some great ideas posted here for giving the grass a chance to recuperate if it's disappearing

I have 3 banties and 1 RI Red in a yard that is about 10x10. Couldn't keep grass in there for too long. But now I let them free range the entire yard (12 acres), grass in up to my knees in there now.

I read about placing 8 to 12 inches of hay over the floor of the run...or part thereof...I wonder how that might help preserve parts of it.

I have 5 pullets in a 10 x 10 dog run, and they decimatied the grass within two weeks. So small run even with very few chickens does not stand a chance. Maybe a big run would
