Does McMurray put extra chicks in their orders?

They sure do send extras. I just ordered 36 of 3 different breeds and they sent a extra roo for each breed and a mystery chick. I believe that the free rare chick is one of the top hat breeds. It sure is a funny looking little bugger, it kinda looks like somebody glued a yellow cottonball to its head

I got an order on Saturday from MM and they stuck in the free rare and then some. I ordered 30 chicks and got 34. I ordered 15 White Laced Red Cornish stds and got 3 extras, so one must have been the freebie I checked the box for. They added a BBS Cochin bantam too. All of these are sold straight run, so I I don't think they would intentionally have put in cockerels on this batch. If I am feather sexing these right, I have a lot more girls in there. Then again, I am not sure if they are a breed I can do that with. I got more than I need so I can be selective about what I keep to breed.

But, I stick with my previous answer, it all depends on what they have a lot of extras of.

I think it's safer to order in multiples of 25, or very close to it, if you don't want to get a lot of packing peanuts. When you get into the 30-35 chicks range, then I think it starts to be too much for a box sized for 25 chicks. I did that the first time I ordered and they filled out the box, so I got 50 chicks all together. It was also cold weather, so they really needed the boxes to be full, so the chicks could generate enough body heat on the trip. I think it's good advice to call the hatchery and just ask them.
