I found my poor chicken hangin upside down, with one leg tangled up in some plastic tarp strands. I fear "odess" wriggled for a long time trying to get loose and hurt her leg badly. her leg is limp and just hangs from her body as tho it was pulled loose of its socket perhaps . Shes just laying there and cant use it when she tries to stands up. any ideas out there to reset it back?, i know she will need calm and warmth , i am getting her a box for the living room next to the fireplace. food and water will be in there with her. i will hand feed her if necessary. she has been a wonderful healthy pet other than this occurrence for three years. we have a feed store in our small town , to buy her what anyone out there might think of that will help her. the vets here work on large live stock no boutique bird care here, that's 70 miles away. If u can , we sure could use your help.
thanks,
Odess and the big guy

Good Luck with your hen.

One of my ducks was flying, a few months ago, and he supposedly got his foot hung p in the chain-link fence. He was hanging upside down, so I got him untangled and let him be. He limped and favored the hurt foot, but in the morning he was absolutely fine! (The reason I found him hung up was because his sister sibling was quacking so loud and unusually, so I went to check on them!)

"Hung' birds can break a leg or dislocate a hip. In any case recovery from such situations generally takes a long time. I would either isolate the bird or make sure that flock mates are not harassing it. This is the sort of situation where time and the resiliency of our birds sometimes works miracles. Good luck, and welcome to BYC.

Welcome to BYC!!!

I have now idea how to do it if you think it needs return to the socket. However, I agree with the comment that a few days' rest may do wonders. I have a young hen who broke a toe in two places by not realising she'd got too big to fly far and landing very hard on rock. She limped badly for a period and I cosseted her for a bit. Even now I wait till she's relatively near me to call them for treats or bedtime. If she runs too far or too fast, she quickly starts limping again. When I first saw how bad the break was, I wondered if she'd recover, but she has.

Do you have something to treat her for the shock? I have a product called PolyAid (I'm in Australia so may be a different brnad name where you are). Or you can make your own electroyte mixture. I haven't tried it but I have this recipe.

1 cup water
* 2 tsp sugar
* 1/8 tsp salt
* 1/8 tsp baking soda
Combine all ingredients and warm slightly.
Mix 1 teaspoon in one litre of water.

You might need to dose her to make sure she gets some and doesn't get dehydrated. Good Luck! Let us know how she gets on.

my chicken had broke or dislocated its leg then 2 days later another one did as well i had a question do all chickens do this and if not what can i do to stop it?
