First time chicken granny here. My 6 birds are all different breeds and now are 14 weeks old. It has become apparent that my pretty Buff Orpington is a rooster... Twice the size of the others, giant crop, crowing, though it is a feeble crow at this point I must say! We got them for eggs and fun for me and the grand daughters, but some of what I have read makes it sound like I have to get rid of the roo to have good, edible eggs (later). Is it true? Do I have to get rid of him or build a whole different coop and run?

you can eat fertilized eggs. if you collect them every day and put them in a cool place (refrigerator) then there wont be a difference when u eat them.
by the way, welcome to BYC

We eat fertile eggs, I just sold some hatching eggs and the guy bought a young cockerel I had that was destined for the stew pot, he made the comment that he believes fertile eggs taste better...I cant say I know the difference as its been ages since I ate an unfertile egg but I just know my eggs are good!

That's fantastic news! So far the girls seem happy with him, so as long as he doesn't become mean, we will be golden! Or, Buff!

I have two Orphington hens (buff) and they are very sweet. BO's tend to be a docile breed, so your rooster will probably be a nice guy.

I have a BO Rooster and he is lovely

He looks after his girls very well, and doesn't have a vicious bone in his body.

He doesn't crow much either. Only in the mornings for about ten minutes.

I am lucky to have him. If yours turns out anything like mine, you're in for a real treat.
