Does raising meat birds really save you money?

Well I am against the humaneness of poultry farms, but I dont know the first thing about it and I would have to do alot of research... I feel that if I had to pay someone to do it it would be much more in cost..... It will be up for thought in the future.

We charge $4.60/lb for whole birds that are raised organically on pasture. That is about on par for our area. Could our customers raise their own birds on organic feed and pasture grass for less than they pay us? Absolutely. However, especially in our area, people can't or don't want to raise their own meat so they buy local chicken from us and let us do all the hard work.

Not unless you've really got it down.

And if you're looking for info you mention, check the first thread in this section. There's everything you need to know here, and a huge number of people that can answer questions you can't find in the "Sticky" section of through a search.

we had 65 last spring and they averaged $1.85 / lb. - they weighed anywhere from 4.5lbs to 7.5lbs. this included all feed, bedding, supplies, chick cost, someone to butcher, .etc.
they were meaty and delicious!

I dissagree about the stuff they "pump" into meat. People don't see, thanks to media and markeeting to folks like us....that those things also cost business ppl who latly have said, "ya know I don't gain anything from these habbits".

you can save by getting 100 + birds betwen friends, feeding lots of scraps, grass ect. I trade for my feed. Then, think of the things you are NOT spending money on... the mall, movies.. ect.

I've picked up 2 silkies. next year I'm planning to hatch eggs, sell the extra hens for feed money..and raise the roo's on back pasture so I can just go out back and kill 2 or 5 per week.
