I'm trying to figure out whether or not I should get a few more ducks. This is my first time with ducklings and I'm not really a duck person
but we got a pair for MIL (hatched 2/24) because she's letting me have my chickens at her place (we're in town, she's not). One is a Pekin, Daisy, definitely female, the other is a Cayuga, Nikki, gender unknown. They are super cute together and super sweet, especially Daisy, and my MIL is super protective of her, insisting that no harm may ever come to her. If they're both female, no problem, lots of eggs

.
My concern is that as time goes by, I still haven't ever heard Nikki quack and I'm afraid she might actually be a Drake. Since it's just the two of them, I'm worried about him overbreeding Daisy and hurting her. If he goes to freezer camp, she'd be alone with the chickens, no good.
He's a little smaller than her, but I don't know how much protection that would give her from him.
Right now we still see ducklings for sale around here, but I'm concerned about not having them available later in the year (maybe they are? I've never looked, input?) and wondering if she'll be okay until they can join her if we have to order them later.
Or am I just overthinking this and they'll likely be fine?
TIA, you guys have been a huge help already!
