I just bought 4 chicks (hopefully hens) yesterday at Murdoch's and one is supposed to be a "barred rock" and has a white spot on the top of it's head (top of photo). Last night while researching online I found information stating some sex link males will be black with a white spot on their head. So now i"m wondering if my little critter perhaps got tossed in the wrong tub of chicks. Does anyone recognize that as being a sign of a male or do barred rock chicks have white spots on top of their heads? Thanks for any help/info/opinions.

Barred rock chicks have the white spot on the head whether male or female. Male black sexlinks have it because they are barred (females are not so no head spot on black sexlink pullet chicks). It doesn't indicate breed, only pattern.

I have discovered that the spot on the head is the least accurate way to sex a barred rock. My first 6 barred rock babies were supposed to consist of 1 cockerel and 5 pullets. They are 6 1/2 weeks old now, and I knew at 4 weeks that I had 4 cockerels and 2 pullets. Here's some pictures to show what their spots were at a day old, and what they looked like at 5 weeks. Not even the "dark leg wash means pullet" was accurate with mine.

Zeus...was picked out as my "cockerel", which he is, but I ended up with 3 more cockerels:

Pixie...supposed to be a pullet, is a cockerel:

Brave Boy...was supposed to be a pullet, is a cockerel:

Boring boy...was supposed to be a pullet, is a cockerel:

Athena...was supposed to be, and IS, a pullet:

Boring Girl...was supposed to be, and IS, a pullet:

You honestly won't know until the chick is older. Sorry I couldn't guess your chick's gender!

Thx for the info. Liked seeing your pics too and by those I'm suspect that I have a roo in the bunch. Guess we'll see.
