I'm new to backyard chickens. I'm sure this is perfectly normal, but wondering if this position means anything other than she's trying to cool off?

Nope. She's just sun bathing. If they are hot they will seek shade and stand with their wings away from their body while panting

mine when they come out the coop first time I saw them do this, i was really worried but let them be, they like to tan LOL

No problem! I had someone chicken sitting for me that called me sobbing crying because they thought one of my hens was dead. Turns out she was sun bathing

My crazy birds all do this, too. When I let them out to free range my Australorps in particular all like to lay out on the concrete patio like this. Like you, I thought they were dying at first!

Chicken Yoga - I like it. She has started rolling on her back in the dirt, too. These chickens are pretty darn entertaining - particularly my little Blanche.

My chicks also do the yoga thing. I was worried the first time I saw it, but noticed the chicken got right up as I approached it and looked normal, so I figured it was (normal).

Haha I just started raising chickens this year and I first noticed the chicks doing it under the heat lamp. They look too funny! Now that they are outside, I love watching them dust bath! They really do get that dirt all in them and under their wings!! It's hilarious sometimes bc two or three will want the exact same dirt spot!
