I'm not sure about vegetable oil. It's worth a try, though.

I use sweet almond oil. Vegetable oil should be fine, or at least still better than water. You want a light oil, which is why coconut is so nice, it's much less globby than say olive. But it's more important for the oil to be free from any additives that might distress the chick, so no scented massage oil! And water will dry back out too quickly.
I've heard Vaseline is good too, or plain neosporin.
