I picked up 1 or 2 day old silkie bantam chicks.
(2 of them)
I’ve raised silkie before but usually get at least 6 at a time. So just wanna make sure this setup looks ok.
I have a 100w ceramic heat bulb in the lamp
Just wanna make sure they aren’t to hot or cold. The one was panting but now isn’t. Maybe stress?
it doesn’t feel hot under the lamp where they lay. Just warm. And they aren’t trying to get away from it. But they aren’t piled together either so I hope that’s a sign they are happy.
eating a little. But not drinking yet (just got them a couple hours ago) I showed them and dipped their beaks but not interested yet.

What is the temperature in the room?

Would you stick a thermometer under the heat where the chicks are and let me know what it says?

Room temp 68
Under the lamp where they would lay says 77 right now (I just put it under there a few minutes ago )
Chicks aren’t huddling or crying?

88 degrees now.
they aren’t sleeping directly under it. More like the edges of it.

At night I’m always terrified the heat lamp will malfunction or the bulb die. How do I make sure everything is ok throughout the night? Should I wake halfway through the night to check?

If it will make you sleep better check on them. I use a 60 watt incandescent bulb and goto bed check on them in morning.
I use 2 lights also.
Looks like nice setup.

If the chicks stay at the edges of the brooder the lamp is too hot 🥵. You should hang it a little higher,
They are at the edges of where the heat lamp heat is. Not the edges of brooder. (I should’ve been more specific. )
They have plenty of space away from the heat lamp.
it’s registering at 88 directly under it. And 70 on other end of brooder
