Does this poop look normal?

Yea so 1 day at the maintenance dose & 2 of them have bloody poop again - not bad as bad as it was but...

I have Sulmet, should I use it? I wish the Avian vet here wasn't a total moron who I don't trust. He won't treat them after just a fecal, he wants to actually see them & he's booked out for weeks.

@MysteryChicken
If the corid doesnt clear it up in 5 days, give them a sulfa drug such as sulfadimethoxine or SMZ-TMP. The sulfadimethoxine will require a script from a vet or you can get it from a vet.

I've used Sulmet a long time ago but it was taken off the market several years ago, If your bottle is no more than a year old, it should be okay. Make sure you give your birds a probiotic after using the Sulmet. I highly recommend buttermilk mixed with chopped boiled eggs or buttermilk mixed in plain boiled white rice.

Dosage for Sulmet 12.5 liquid solution is 2 tablespoons per gallon of water for 2 days. Then reduce the dosage to 1 tablespoon per gallon of water for the next 4 days.
Sulmet should stop the bloody poop.

Thank you @dawg53. It is a new bottle that I purchased just to have on hand, it's a generic Sulmet I think - 99% Sulfamethazine. I hear it's pretty harsh, I have some proboitics & vitamins I'll give them when done.

Did the Sulmet work? My birds are still the same :(

@SarahGfa Ugh, this is frustrating, isn't it? I didn't use the Sulmet, I got a fecal float done & everything was negative as of this evening. I had continued with the Corid for an extra couple days while waiting, I guess I'll just move down to the maintenance dose tomorrow. Yesterday there was a very small bit of blood, today looked good.

Are you still treating with Corid or did you try the sulfa/antibiotic? How are they acting?

I wonder if they can still be passing blood due to damage to their intestinal lining even though they don't have cocci anymore. I guess I'll see what tomorrow brings.

It is frustrating! I tried to do sulfa but I couldn't get it to the correct chicks. Can't seem to figure out which ones are pooping blood. They are all on the lower dose corid (3/4 tsp per gallon) right now. Everyone is eating and active, but I find one or two bloody droppings almost every morning. I am getting some fish sulfa and will put it in everyone's water starting tomorrow.

I'm not suggesting anyone not finish a course of antibiotics, of course... but I have like one pill left of several antibiotics and they go a long way dosing animals who obviously take less.

Can you get a fecal float done? Maybe post a pic of their poop & get some opinions.

That's my story too, 2 out of 4 piles under the roost today with a bit of blood. Everyone is acting fine, they always have been.

But they tested negative for coccidiosis & worms. & it certainly isn't nearly as bad as it was when I made this post. :confused: I'm going to finish the low maintenance dose & then vitamins/probiotics & see. I'm hoping it's normal for their gut to take a bit to heal.

None of the vets here are willing to do a fecal without seeing the birds. It will probably just test negative anyway since they have been on Corid. I am positive that it is cocci because my older hens were acting sort of depressed and now they are way more active after being treated.

Sulfa in the water for everybody now, and I will let you know if it works!
