Does this really work?

My grandma told me when my chickens start laying I could put extra buckets of water in their pen during winter and start adding salt or cayane pepper in their food and they'd lay alot more during winter then normal?

I was always told to put warm water in there, and it does seem to work. Winter months seem to be the best egg laying time here. I just use a fountain base heater.
