I have a 8 month old silkie that lays for me daily to every other day like clockwork. yesterday she started sitting in her nest and I thought she might be laying but no eggs. she has fluffed up her feathers and just sits there. when I remove her she goes right back to the nest. today the same behavior . she is eating and drinking although not as much as usual. she is also pooping normally. I thought she might be egg bound because I didn't get an egg today either so I checked her vent massaged her abdomen but could not feel an egg. she is more puffed up than she looks usually when she's laying. I felt no sign of an egg and she does not seem to be straining. I checked her over again and her vent looks normal no discharge her eyes are bright breathing is good crop is draining but she goes back to her nest puffs up and sits
no eggs. she got up ate drank then went back to her nest. when she is sitting on the nest she fluffs up her feathers and sleeps or just sits there. she does not get nasty when I come near her but she does not want to leave her nest. I checked her over again and saw no sign of an egg. its not like her not to lay? do you think she has gone broody on me or am I dealing with something more serious? as I mentioned she does not appear to be straining but is really fluffed up. what do you think? thanks for reading.

One of mine did the same but she made quite a distinctive nice when either another chicken came near or one of us. The feathers went up on her neck. So we moved d her o a separate house and gave her some fertilized eggs to sit on. No we have four amazing chicks and a good mum. The other nine hens haven't haven't done this. Claire

Silkies are notoriously broody. Sounds like yours has joined in

Some broodies aren't mean. I have one that lets me visit and pet her. I can check her eggs or chicks and no worries. My other broody is a pterodactyl and tries to peck your hand off.
