Does TSC ever...

LOL! I saw that exact thing happen at Western Ranch in Vacaville. Grandma pulls chick out (DO NOT HANDLE written all over the tub) and hands it to little grand daughter who proceeds to squish it almost to death! Then she just drops it back in the tub! Poor little chicky...

I would think maybe a TSC employee would want to learn to vent sex.... but then again maybe not! It's easier to sell the girls, but harder to sell the boys. Ignorance is bliss, right? Plus, without keeping birds back while learning to vent sex, they'd never really figure out if they were accurate/right!

Isn't the saying something like
If you sex it as a male, you have a male. If you sex it as a female, there's a 50% chance you were right

Heck, your lucky if you can get anyone at TSC to even take care of their poultry and waterfoul. I deem to say that any critter we buy from there is a Rescue. We got a Welsh Harlequin from there that was soo tiny and getting trampled by some rouens in the same bin. We didn't think that she was going to make it, because she was very off. They didn't have water nor feed, and their shavings were drenched and packed with poo. Now I know that normal for ducks, but this was really bad.

She's now 3 weeks old and likes to sit on my chest and watch TV...

This is her when we brought her home. With her friend David.

I was at TSC last week and saw a tub labeled " Black Wyandottes straight run",.. well,.. there were some reddish chicks that were in there with all the little black ones and I didn't see a bin with anything that could have been a red chick,. so I asked the Manager, who was standing there,. what breed the red ones were,. he said they were "pullets",..
I said" Oh,Ok,. but what BREED are they,..

he looked at me like I was an idiot and said slowly " that's what they ARE.. PULLET chickens" and went on to tell me that if I bought some ( min of 6) it was called a "straight run" and I might get males or females but if I bought "the black 'uns"... those were all girls.

I have no hope that they will ever be sexing chicks at my TSC.....

I have to admit,. the chicks and ducks were well cared for at my TSC,even if they are ignorant of what they are selling. But I'm so glad you rescued that little duckling! What a cutie!

I am learning to sex ducklings because the feed store we go to only orders strait run ducklings, because who ever they bought them from told them it was IMPOSSIBLE to sex ducklings until they had their feathers. If that's so then I have no Idea how any one can order sexed ducklings lol. I am very new at sexing and I am very gentle with the little guys because I am afraid to hurt them, but I found one male for sure and one female for sure, then I put them back to try on some others which was my mistake because I couldn't do it again! lol

I'm thinking maybe I should buy a few and vent sex them at home. I hate to gamble, but I'm not spending money to order from a hatchery. Even if I was able to drive down and pick up ducks from Metzer I'd still have to pay for gas for the 3 hour trip...I hope my boys don't get amorous for a while yet.

Bought my 4 ducklings and wanted all female, the feed store said straight run only so I asked if I would be allowed to try vent sexing them. The employee said SURE...then asked "what exactly is vent sexing?"

He was happy enough with my response that I'd be looking for their private parts. lol

I consider mine rescues also. They had NO water and were so overcrowded they were stinky, dirty, and had bald spots. Then when I brought them home I noticed they had bumblefoot too.

Never again will I buy from there just because I don't want to support businesses that neglect their animals.

We have two feed stores in our area that we've rescued chicks from. One never knows what they have in stock and their animals are nasty and covered in guck, the employees are also very very rude, they act like its not their fault their animals are ill. We rescued a Minorca and a few leg horns, we had to hose them off and the water dripping from them was all nasty and brown.
The other feed store has prices 5 dollars higher than every where else in town and they keep their birds all in one tub, regardless of age, so pullets are walking all over day old chicks, we took home three silkies after heckling them down to 6 bucks.

The first feed store I mentioned; we called to see what kind of ducks and geese they had, I dont think we can ever give them our business again after the response they gave us:

Store:Hello, How may we help you today?
Me: Hi I was wondering what kind of Ducks and Geese you have at the monent?
Store: Okay let me go and see..... Hello
Me:Hi
Store: Well, we have a few yellow ones, a few that are kinda gray yellow, some have tufts on their heads, there are a few that have stripes under their eyes, some are black and yellow, and we have a few older ducks that all look the same.
Me: Oh... Okay....Well thank you for your help.
Store: Glad we could help you today, is there any thing else we can help you with?
Me: Nope, thank you.
Store: Okay then, bye bye.*click*
(here i sit with the phone still up to my ear and I take and look at it)
Me:.... really?

TRUE STORY... some people shouldn't be allowed to sell live animals...
