Doesn't ANYONE know HOW to count change back anymore?

I do, I do. Actually I find it amusing. Let the cashier ring it up and give them a 10. Then when the start to give you what the register says pull out some change to make it so you don't have 67 cents with your ones. Really screws them up.

I think in another 10 years, basic math skills won't be needed anymore so they will stop teaching it. It will be ok as long as the world doesn't crash.

Two different things: I was shopping at a small store when the power went out, security lights came on. I went to the register to check out. The young lady at the register said she couldn't check me out because she couldn't add the items up. I just looked at her, then asked if she could use a calculator. She looked at me like I was asking her to do quantum physics. I sighed, pulled out a calculator, added up my items, told her how much it was, then added in the tax and told her the total. She looked at the things I had and asked me if I was sure. I was. Then she said that she couldn't open the register to give me change. I told her how to open the register manually and gave her exact change, even counted it out to her. Her comment to me when I did was "gee you must be real smart." I smiled and responded that I wasn't, just understood 1st grade math and a calculator. I was the only customer that was able to get my items. The other customers just stood around. "sigh"

Second thing: when my children were younger and went shopping with me, as soon as the cashier would ring the total, I would tell my child the total and how much I was giving the cashier. I made my children tell me how much change I was supposed to get back. Then insisted that my child count the change before we left the checkout. Surprise here, all three of my children know math, while their peers are clueless.

I allways wondered if they are not counting your change back to you,does the manager/owner know or care?
If you where training someone to work at the register wouldnt they know they could not count change back?
So if they could not do it would they would teach them to or just go the easy way and let them just hand your change back.

I've had plenty of cashiers short change themselves. I always give them back the extra. I hate it when they put my 20 in the drawer and give me change for a 10. Then of course they can't remember what it was and the think you are trying to short change them. My parents owned a hobby shop when I was a kid. My Dad always made sure we put the bill on the edge above the drawer and counted the change back correctly. That way we knew we did it right and the customer did too.

The way they do it now can be annoying but I'm used to it.

I can see where people try to short change bartenders. They get so incredibly busy. You're doing 3 things at once with a bunch of people pressed against the counter all telling you what they want. Wouldn't be able to do that myself.

As for being behind people. The absolute worse is the old lady with a purse full of junk with change mixed in to it. Has to give the cashier exact change and digs around for 5 minutes finding it all. I only say old lady because it is always an old lady that does it, not criticizing old people. Getting there myself.

I'm waiting for the day when they put a barcode on your forehead and you don't have to carry any cash

The first job that I had full time and not just a summer job my boss required ud to count change back. If he caught you not doing it you would be fired. I went to a store once and the cash register was down. I gave the woman and she was a woman not a kid probably older than me, had no idea what change to give me. She was trying to figure it out on a calculator and not having any luck. So when I told her how much change to give me she looked at me like I was trying to rip her off. I said hand me the change I told you and I will count it back in front of you so you will see I am correct. She did and was amazed that it was right. She told the other girl wow this lady is a walking cash register. REALLY??? SERIOUSLY!!!

OMG! You hit one of my pet peeves with this post! LOL It drives me nuts!!! I tried to teach a young girl at the handy mart once but I gave up. My bill for my purchase there was like $7 but I also won $2 on a lottery ticket. I told her I would just give her the $5 for the difference and she could not grasp it whatsoever. The line was backing up so I told her to hand me my $2 I won, I handed it back to her along with my $5 and left.... I just don't get it!!!
