Yesterday, while some of our chickens were free ranging on our lawn(including a hen and her 3 chicks), our neighbor's young brindle-colored boxer-like dog came running onto our lawn after the hen and chicks! And this is Setherina's(the Buff Orp hen) first time being a mother hen, but she knew exactly what to do; she made a loud alarm and the chicks went scrambling under a nearby bush to hide. Setherina puffed up and tried to attack the dog, making loud cackling noises, which made our 2 roosters start their loud alarm calls. At the time, I was in the house, unaware of what was going on outside; but when I heard the rooster's alarm calls, and the loud noises Setherina was making, I immediately went out to see what was wrong. Setherina had retreated to the bush with her chicks to hide. The boxer was standing in our driveway. Since the boxer isn't aggressive and is afraid of strangers(and he only tried to get the hen and chicks because he wanted to play with them and he was curious), when he saw us he ran off down the road and back to his owner's house. Setherina and her chicks cautiusly came out from hiding, and luckily, all 3 chicks were unharmed. Setherina was fine, too.

We called my dad(who was at the store) and when he got home, he called the police because it's against the law to let your dogs run around on other people's property. The same dog had chased some of our Red Star hens and RIR rooster a few weeks ago, and he has intruded on our property many times before. But we haven;t said anything because we didn't want to cause a problem. My dad has also told our neighbors to keep their dogs on their own property because we have chickens free ranging, but that didn't work.
So now we are getting the police involved; it was too close when the boxer tried to get Setherina and her chicks.

Hopefully we don't see the boxer running around again.

Thanks for reading!

(P.S. These neighbors don't really like our roosters crowing very much, so that may be why they let the dogs out to run around all the time. My dad even heard one of the guys who live there(who is actually a little mental, in a serious way) urging the dogs to get the chickens when he let them out. And one reason why our roosters crow is because the same guy makes crowing noises at them, which they think is another rooster!

Having my neighbors dog killed some of my chickens last week and reading some of your other's opinion on this subject (people who let their dogs run, kill/terrorize livestock and just don't care), I have adopted this attitude and suggest it to others:

Yeah sure... like I said, we didn't want to cause any trouble. The only way we would do that is if the dog was attacking the chickens(like trying to kill them) and/or was trying to attack us. Again, he isn't aggressive. In fact, he is actually friendly, just really playful. You should know that a young dog like him is bound to get excited when he sees chickens running around.

I tolerated my neighbor's dogs daily chicken raids for several months on and off until I finally lost it and told them the dogs would be shot on sight. It's been a little better though. She does let them out once in a while (not exactly sure why she does that), but at least I'm ready.

I wouldn't put up with it. If you've told them to keep the dogs off your property and they're still coming, I'd check the ordinances and see if you actually can SSS them, and then just do it. Before they kill your whole flock.

77horses....Where are you in New England? I'm in NH and I'm having a tough time with neighbors who let their dogs out (many times) and on Fathers Day they killed one of my chickens. We are going to go to small claims court right now. It's a long process, a lot of paperwork and money to pay for court fees and the sheriff to serve the papers and costs for copies of the police reports.

If I had to do it all over again I would have a policeman escort me to the neighbors house and tell him point blank (in front of the officer) that I have a right and obligation to protect my property and I will shoot his dog if I see it chasing my chickens again. Perfectly legal in NH.

Good luck to you. Give mommy chicken and the roosters a few extra grapes on me. Good work.

I didn't know what SSS meant either but my BYC friends explained it. One BYC member said

S shove him in a

purpletree23- I'm in Maine. And the police came up and talked to them, haven't seen the dogs since then(yet). If they do come again and chase the chickens, we will be bringing them to court.
