Dog and Eggs

Our dog stays outside to protect the flock. The flock doesn’t use the coop. They prefer to sleep on the back porch. It’s not lit or covered but both flocks we’ve had choose the porch.

One en lays her eggs in the coop but the others just lay around the yard as they have free roam of the yard 24/7.

The duck made a nest in some thorns and I put chicken eggs in it because she hatches them. However, the dog likes to eggs eggs and often takes from her nest, the tree and the yard.

Losing the eggs from her nest makes the duck very upset and she starts digging a hole up against the foundation by the master bedroom when her nest is empty.

Is there a way to get the dog to not eat eggs?

Not to sound blunt or rude, but your being quite unorganized with your animals from what it sounds.Do you have space for extras,do you have a run?Its not a good idea to just throw some eggs under a duck who lives in a nest unprotected in your yard,I’m quite surprised nothing comes and kills tHe birds.Having eggs outhrough your yard and nests will and does attract animals, then again you do have a dog, anything can still happen.

The only way to keep him from getting eggs is to make your animals start nesting in your coop, either lock them up in there if there is some space and adequate ventilation and either natural light or artificial lighting for four or five days,or make a run for them to sroam in and maybe they will get the idea that their coop is their main destination. After a week or two,try letting them back out.

Yeah your going to have to retrain your birds to lay their eggs in the coop/nest boxes. Never heard of anyone breaking a dog of stealing eggs once they start.

Dogs have incredible memories for where they found food. The best way to prevent the dog from eating eggs is to keep them out of reach, i.e., in a nest box in a coop. And chickens and ducks are creatures of habit. They can learn new habits but you have to be persistent.

They have a coop. They used to use the coop. However, they prefer the porch so that’s where they stay at night.

The duck isn’t a random duck. She is our duck. She made her nest where she wanted. She seems to enjoy sitting on the eggs I put in her nest.

My dog protects the flock from other animals and she has never attacked anyone in the flock.

I have integrated many chicks into free roam flock. Since they are free roam, they get to roam 24/7. They can use the coop anytime but choose not to.

I understand the situation, but the point is Birds still need a run.I know it’s not a random duck, you don’t need her hatching eggs in a random nest, she will get snatched.I think you should add another duck or two with her.
My point is a hawk an owl could careless about your dog,it will swoop it right up and rip the heads off,and maybe even swooo it up and take off within a few minutes, the cooos essential.
I would encourage your duck to make nests in the coop.

And a run helps how when they roam over an acre and don’t want to go in the coop? My ducks nest isn’t random.

You do not understand the situation at all.

ETA: our coop has a run. They still don’t want to use the coop. There is nothing wrong with the flock sleeping on the porch if that’s what they like.

I have 30 acres and I also let my birds free range, but only during the day. I don’t want eggs everywhere so I taught them to lay in the nesting boxes. Mine have free run of the land but they always go back to the coop to lay no matter where they might be roaming. Between my rooster and the dog they seem to keep the predators at bay.
