I incubate and brood through 4 weeks my chicks in groups ranging in size from a couple to nearly 6 dozen at a time. This done in my mancave which is accessed through pantry which is connected to kitchen. Problem is during day dog can come into house anytime he wants and he knows how to open door to mancave. In addition he seems compelled to look into brooder and in process puts lid ajar. Lid is to keep chickens in brooder. What happens is dog leaves and a couple minutes later a couple chicks get out and then proceede to kitchen to get at bowls of dog and cat foot. The chicks eat that and then do what chicks do, poop! Biggest problem is hiding evidence of this from wife. I can put chicks back in brooder but it is difficult to erase all signs of poop.
