Dog attack, chicken won’t stand

Sounds like she's in pain if she's shivering.

I agree, I'd apply ointment on the wound.

Hard to know if the leg is broken or not. If the injured one feels a bit different, you can try splinting it. If you decide to put her back in the sling, do so periodically and only when you can monitor her, some birds tolerate a sling, while others will try to get out and injure themselves further. I'll link a splinting manual below.

I'd try to encourage her to eat her normal feed, try offering it wet if she won't eat it dry. Bits of egg, fish or meat can be given for extra protein.

Thank you, I’m going to do the ointment on her wound and look into the splinting. Looks a bit intimidating but I’ll give it a try. I’ll try to get her back on her regular feed as well!

Oh gosh I’m sorry, I understand, I hate causing pain or discomfort. Is vet care an option at all? She may do okay with a lot of time and very little activity. There are some threads here where people have nursed chickens with broken legs and they go on to live normal lives. Our neighbor has a chicken who’s leg broke as a pullet and is crooked now, but he didn’t do anything for it and she does just fine now.
I really really wish I could take her to the vet. but before we got chickens my husband and I had an agreement that if any of the chickens got hurt or sick they would be put down rather than taken to the vet, because we can’t afford it :( I have such a big heart for animals but unfortunately my husband does not. Hearing about your neighbors chicken gives me hope though, thank you ❤️

my heart to you. The leg is going to heal, it may not heal straight, but it will mend in time, the body is programed that way. Always good to get past the chance of shock, once that is no longer a concern. Would depend on the individual bird to let them back to the flock, or to keep them with you. Make sure they have water and food at their level. And give them time. I have larger livestock seen them get through being stepped on.
This gives me hope, thank you ❤️ unfortunately I don’t think i can keep her inside long term so I’m really really hoping she will heal over time and be well enough to go back out with the flock ❤️

I understand. Sometimes vets are so unreasonable. I think there is still a lot you can do to try to nurse her back to health at home, don’t be discouraged. Try offering her some electrolytes with a bit of sugar mixed in to give her a little boost if she seems to need it at any point. Poor girl. Let us know how she does and if you need anything.

Sorry about your injured hen. Can you show a picture of the sling? The sling can help to keep her off the leg, allowing it to heal, but it may take getting used to it. If you decide to splint, use padding, then something stiff such as popsicle sticks, and vet wrap strips. The vet wrap can slip and become too tight and cause more damage, so check circulation often if you do that. If you feel that she is suffering, no one would fault you if you decide to end her suffering. Moistened chicken feed, a small amount of cooked egg, and a bit of tuna or chopped meat can be fed to her from a small cup or tuna can.
