Dog attack... graphic pic!

Hello, my dog got a hold of my rooster. It was my fault, I forgot I let the chickens out and then let the dog out. When I got to my rooster I thought he was dead. But I saw him breathing so I picked him up and he was limp : ( I noticed a large wound on his neck. As I was bringing him into the house he started to hold his head up. He's in a cage now in a dark room. I flushed out his neck but not sure what else to do for him. He tried to get away a little when I cleaned off his wound so I think he may have a good chance but I want to make sure he doesn't get an infection. He's an amazing rooster and takes care of the flock well. Here is a picture of the bite. I can pull the skin away from his neck so I'm not sure if an antibiotic ointment is a good idea, I don't want to trap any germs or dirt. Any advice? I feel terrible (

I always give a Benadryl just one on a big rooster and a half on lil ones.. A old man told me about doing it helps them rest and relax them then just keep washed with peroxide and u can even give just alil penicillin hope this helps ya

No pain killers.

Apply Blue Coat directly to wound. Place an antibiotic like Oxytetracycline in his water.

Gaping wound shown is not one that bothers me. Rather be concerned about puncture wounds on body that penetrate chest cavity to include respiratory system as they are more prone infection. Another concern will be crushing injuries that are difficult to detect. Keep him quite and do not over heat him. Give him same diet as usual.

Start training dog to leave birds alone..

Do you think he will be okay in a small dog cage overnight? I work 12 hour shifts and won't be able to watch him in the house so in the morning I will put him outside but seperate him from his girls. are there any symptoms i should look for regarding a crushing injury?

The dog is getting the gift of a shock collar tomorrow.

Leave him where he is until he crows. Put litter in with him and change is daily. Minimal disturbance beyond water and a little feed plus topical treatment of wound. Crushing wounds are generally difficult to see unless marked by bruising. I know no treatments for crushing other help bird ride it out.

Okay. I worry that he will freak out and try to break out of the cage. I didn't notice any bruising. Thanks a lot for the help
