Dog attack, I don't think there's anything I can do?

What a horrible day today is. Our friends dog who is visiting was let out unsupervised by my daughter who then attacked and killed one of our hens. She has a large puncture wound in the back of her neck and I'm not sure if there are other injuries. She is gasping for breath and I don't have the will to help her end it quickly. I feel so bad. I'm guessing at this point that there is probably no helping her, but if anyone has any advice...I don't know what to do.

Aww that poor baby. What you can do is take her into the house and put her someplace calm and quiet and a little dark. Then rinse her wound out well with Saline and pack it a bit with neosporine and then wrap with some gauze (do you have your chicken first aid kit?) Good luck and I sure hope she makes it

Poor girl. I bet your daughter feels terrible too

It's got to be hard on her as well. Sure hope this helps. I'm hoping with my bump that someone that has went through it can help you a little more.

I'm very sorry as well. If the hen is still gasping and struggling, do you have a neighbor who might be up for helping you dispatch the hen? Someone who hunts perhaps? I know it is very hard...

I had a turkey with a dog abdominal and neck puncture wound when he was just a few weeks old. He is now a daddy!! Do what HanginWith My Peeps said and she may survive.

Alright, I willing to do that, but can she really survive a puncture in the back of her neck?! Saline? She's in a box in the shed now, I just kind of thought I would put her somewhere warm and quiet to die, but you actually think I can help???!!!

Sigh. Nevermind. I just went out to check on her and she's gone. This sucks. We lost one of our others to injury in the summer. I forgot about this part of having pets. Don't really have to worry about other animals killing my dog. I wish we had been watching more closely.

Saline = salt and water.

While it might be possible to save her, neither I nor can anyone else here say for certain since we really don't know the extent of the injury.

That all having been said they are remarkably sturdy creatures.

That really sucks, sorry about your hen. When I hear things like this it's hard to love dogs unless they are small dogs.
