I have 5 Dogs and all are trained and great with all my Birds....Puppies are just doing what puppies do....No training and they have no clue.....

I have been working with them. My question still is whether or not they can be corrected once they get a taste for chicken.

Most dogs can be taught to be safe around chickens. But you have to take the time to teach them. If you don't have the time/interest to do so, it would be best to rehome the dogs.

Is it too late once they have had that taste for chickens?

No, it's not too late. I have German Shepherds and when Loki was a pup, despite my working closely with him, one day he grabbed one of my birds and started to pluck her. He seemed to think she was a squeak toy. I grabbed him and scared the ever loving crap out of him by giving him hell. I think he thought I was going to beat him. I kept a very close eye on him and after a year, it got to where then the chickens are scared by something, they come running to Loki and stand under him for protection. It takes training, consistency and time but it can be done. One of my Shepherds is 1/8 wolf and saw his first chicken when he was 7 years old. He is a very well trained dog and it didn't take him long at all to understand the chickens were now part of our home. There are many posts on here about how to train your dog. Do NOT tie a dead bird around its neck.

Of course they can....Dogs learn quickly..Consistency is the key and never allow them too fail...

She's not exactly running around. She seems to move about fine if she needs to but she would rather just be left alone. I still don't know if I need to be worried about her just living miserably for a few days and dying, or if she's got a good fighting chance.

She may b bit sore and traumatized. If she's moving around and eating/drinking some..thats a hopefully sign. U can put something like Neosporin or antibiotic ointment on her wounds to. Just keep an eye on her around ur other birds...cuz they may pick at her wound to the point of killing her..they do have a cannibalistic side. Thats why a lot of people recommend blu-cote. It is purple and disguises the wound so other chickens r less likely to pick.

SHEPHERDS are a herding breed...labs are a hunting breed...big difference ...it is natural for hunting breeds ..bird dogs to go after birds...two together are double trouble! .shepherds on the other hand were bred to protect flocks of animals for the owners.

I beg to differ. My son has a working lab that is great with his birds. You cant just assume things based on breed

Yes...my one is a female Golden Retriever/Aussie cross and she is fantastic at keeping Fox and Coyotes away...I have a Maremma also and he stays with my flock of Birds as she chases them off...I also trained a Yorkie to help me herd my Birds in nightly....
