My favorite Ameraucana, Trixie, flew the coop and my puppy got her. I should have locked both the gates instead of just the inner one. I feel sooooo guilty. He skinned the back of her neck and head, plucked her feathers from her back and she has a wing injury. I don't think it's broken, just lacerated and the small feathers near her body are gone, but the big feathers are there. I thought she was a goner for sure, but I got the dog away from her, and she started walking off. So she is in my laundry room in a brooder with a heat lamp, water, and food. She looks awful but is eating and drinking heartily and was even chirping for me. I am going to the feed store first thing in the morning to get some anti-bx for her. I was wondering the best way to dress her wounds. Can I bandage a chicken? She looks horrid, but her spirits seem high and she is acting well so I think if I can avoid infection that she might bounce back so I just can't bare to cull her.

I feel awful, the puppy is only 5 months old and had never shown aggression toward the chicks before.

SOunds like a puppy being a puppy. He was playing which is what puppies do. Prevention is the best way to not have these type accidents although sometimes we cant prevent all accidents. Just wait and see how she does. I have seen much worse chickens come out ok.

I've always been told iodine on wounds. As far as the puppy, you are going to have to work feverishly at it now that it has nearly killed one. I hope it's something you can work through with him/her.

this is an adult bird and not a chick?
you need to flush the wound(s) >in particular any puncture ones with sterile saline (you can make this yourself by boiling 1/4 tsp salt in a quart of water for five minutes) and then apply triple antibiotic creme (needs to be kept moist)
dependent on the extent of the wound a healing creme such as GRANULEX V may be need to complete the healing (can you post a pic?)
Keep separated in a clean draftfree environment...quiet no stress.

The chick is a teen about 7 weeks old. I can't get my computer to read my camera card at the moment.

Thanks I will make up some saline and I am going to get some granulex for her. It's pretty bad on the back of her head. She made it through the night and is acting like her normal self. I am hopeful.
