Yes, it has happened again. This time, my Older Sister left the bottom bolt of HER dog's pen opened. After she learned she could pry back the gate and get into the hen house, we put that there. Now it was left unbolted and the Beagle/Basset/Sheltie whirlwind was at it again. She succeded in attacking ALL the hens. In full view of our innocent three month olds. Patches (the dog) killed one hen and has severly injured another. Walnut, the chicken. has cuts on her neck and gashes on her lower back. All she does is sit in the nesting box, her "Safe, happy place" That she goes to when scared, and the straw became a bit bloody so I changed it. Is there anything I can do?

Take her out, bring into your house. Wash and treat wounds,Make sure wounds are treated at least 4 times a day. I don't know what kind of ointment you have, but do not use anything ending in "caine" toxic to chickens. I don't know how severe her wounds are,but you have to watch for flies, may have to cover wounds if this will be a problem. Also keep her separated, other chickens will peck at her wounds. Give her some electrolytes for shock, keep her quiet and warm. Try and get her to eat and drink, offer some of her favorite foods. Most important, find a way to ensure dogs don't attach chickens again. Hope she starts to feel better.
