Hi, a stray dog has hurt one of my chickens. There is no chicken vet around so I Doctor my girls myself. My question is this. If an air sac has been hit can my girl come back from that? I have patched up the hole and she is not working hard to breath. Also should I automatically dose her with tylan? Thanks for any words of wisdom !

I have a wiener dog...he once just about humped one of my Cochins to death. Yeah, I got him neutered after that.

Anyways she was real beat up, so I cleaned her wounds out with warm water and put neosporin on the wounds and raw honey. The raw honey patched those things up in about a week. I'd put a new coat on every morning, after washing her up again. The raw honey was great, but neosporin is cheaper and may be what you have on hand.

Chickens can patch up from crazy things, and as long as you keep her cleaned up with fresh wrappings and what not, she should be fine. :)

I'm sorry this has happened to you. I, myself, have had numerous dog related attacks resulting in over 50 deaths in my flocks over a five year period during my FFA career. I had one survive with a rather large six inch flap of skin that my mother helped me sew back together. The hen's name was Lucky before the incident, I guess I had named her correctly as she survived a few more attacks afterwards.

For your bird, definitely get her some antibiotics to help with infection. If you notice any bloating or mushiness around the air sac that you think may have been compromised, lance the area so the air can escape. I would watch her closely for any change in behavior, as Wooing said, chickens can pull through set backs surprisingly well. Good luck!
