dog attacked chickens...

can you start a thread on this? My mix breed, larger girl LOVES to chase and run. She might not eat a chicken but she would gladly chase it around and around until it dropped dead. I am getting chicks this march and I would love to break her of the habit.

Oddly enough - I've not had any problems with any of my three dogs going after the chickens. I have a St bernard, a Chocolate lab and a terrier/pekinese that kills rodents around the coop. It's actually the chickens who go after the dogs. They take bones away from the Saint and just object to the little guy walking around. The chickens are relative newcomers to the yard and we expected problems with the dogs. So, you never know...

We just got a nice pup. He is a great Pyrenees about 8 weeks old.
We let him play with the chickens whenever we have time to watch him. We have a corgi that the flock has pretty much accepted as another hen. It is strange though, the pup causes a lot of balking and running.

We will train him just like we trained our Rest in peace Red Healer we lost a few months back. Dang, he was just getting to be a good pup too. Yes, YOU NEED TO TRAIN YOUR DOGS.

People are so lazy about this important need. Dogs will revert to their hard wiring unless they are trained and trained well. Shock collars just do not work all that well. One HAS to spend time and effort in the training.

I hate it when I hear that some one has had chickens killed becuase of a untrained, unkempt or just vicious dog. Heck, we as Americans are letting our children run wild, why not the dog.

"shoes" is right.. even WITH training i never ever let my dogs and chickens MIX when i am not around,, never.. that is what fences and hotwire was made for..
if a chicken runs (and they do) if a chicken sqwaks (and they do) if a chicken flaps its wings (and they do) it can trigger instincts BRED into the dog for hundereds of years,, to chase, hunt, bite, herd, hold, kill ect.. even without all the selective breeding we humans have done, DOGS are still meat eating hunters... PREDATORS!!!!.. you think this is all going to "go away" because they live in our houses????
even if your dog is "fine" around the chickens now.. one day, it only takes one time for the perfect trigger,, then your dog will become a chicken killer...

and YES i think we should start a "how to train fido" thread.... and we can all give hints/tips...

deb... you might not be able to stop your dog competely.. BUT if you have a good RECALL (come when called) and you are her leader.. tell her to DOWN and STAY..... you might be able to train her to ignore the chickens.. the instinct will still BE there but when you are there you can control it..

IMHO anyone who has dogs that are not PROVEN to leave the chickens alone should have the chickens in a dog-proof pen, unless they are outside to supervise. I could not imagine leaving chickens alone with dogs even in the house, that could accidentally get let out. That is why I cannot free-range, there are too many neighborhood dogs that I have seen running free from time to time. Seen two many posts here about that "perfect" dog that "went bad" for just an instant.

Lost some to dogs too. And yes, they were my dogs. And yes, it was my fault. It was a valuable lesson for me though now and thanks to the new security measures I've implemented, (and due in part to the nightmare of losing the others) my four girls are safe and sound now.
