Hello all,
Several days ago a random dog no one has ever seen before broke into my duck/chicken pen. No casualties, and it seemed like no injuries at first (my Khakis are very difficult to inspect, and i saw no blood at the scene or on the ducks), but one duck seems to have suffered a minor looking (based on other photos i have seen online) single puncture wound near her rear. They were all a bit shook up afterwards and we had a down day of eggs, but back up to 100% lay the next day afterwards, so obviously not too badly stressed, and have gotten an egg from every bird daily since, so i know my injured girl isn't feeling TOO bad. It would have been much worse but my neighbor noticed and smacked the dog in the face with a wrist rocket and it took off. I only noticed her injury today after i witnessed her cleaning it in the pond, so I caught her and have her cooped up in the duck house until i figure something out. I will see if I can get some pics when my girlfriend gets home to help me clean the wound. It really doesn't look horrible, it does not look infected, although not necessarily as clean as i would like either. Should i keep her isolated from the rest of flock as you would with chickens? I know they are less prone to cannibalism/pecking, but they are still around the chickens in the pen all day (they have separate coops at night). I know i will need to clean the wound, and am unsure if the vet in town would even treat a duck, and am wondering what is the best way to support my little lady during her recovery, and what has worked well for all of you?
